Background

Background

Burwood Council is currently developing a vision for a key urban renewal precinct known as Burwood North.

The transformation and expansion of the town centre is being stimulated by the planned Burwood North Sydney Metro Station, which will play a key role as the main centre half way between the global City of Sydney and Parramatta.

The NSW Government is delivering Sydney Metro West, a new underground metro railway which will double rail capacity between Parramatta and the Sydney CBD, with a target travel time of about 20 minutes between the two centres and ten minutes between Burwood North and Sydney CBD.

Sydney Metro West stations have been confirmed at Westmead, Parramatta, Sydney Olympic Park, North Strathfield, Burwood North, Five Dock, The Bays, Pyrmont and Hunter Street in the Sydney CBD.

Burwood Town Centre is already home to a diverse and active community who values both the vibrancy of our town centres and the history of the area. The Metro Station will act as a catalyst further strengthening and transforming Burwood North into a vibrant destination with a unique offering of food and retail-entertainment options.

Burwood North Metro Station

Sydney Metro was granted planning approval to construct twin underground rail tunnels between Westmead and The Bays for Sydney Metro West in March 2021.

Acciona Ferrovial Joint Venture (AFJV) has been awarded the contract to deliver 11 kilometres of twin metro rail tunnels between Sydney Olympic Park and The Bays and excavate five new metro stations, including Burwood North Station.

Burwood North Construction Sites

Construction site layout for Burwood North Station

Two construction sites will be established to excavate the new Burwood North Station. After the buildings on these sites have been demolished, a station box about 30 metres deep will be excavated at the northern site and a shaft about 14 metres deep will be excavated at the southern site, along with an underground pedestrian link which will connect the two sites under Parramatta Road.

Early work was undertaken in November 2021 and included ground condition investigations and utility identification in and around the construction sites. Major work at the southern and northern construction sites will start in January 2022.

Construction Hours

Work at the Burwood North Station sites is approved to be carried out during the following construction hours:

Monday to Friday 7am to 6pm and Saturday 8am to 6pm

• Tunnelling, cross passage and cavern excavation below ground is approved to occur 24 hours a day.

Preliminary Engagement Findings

Burwood North Precinct Community Engagement Findings

The area known as the Burwood North Precinct is approximately 26 hectares bounded by Meryla Street and Burwood Park to the south, Parramatta Road to the north, Shaftesbury Road to the east and Park Road to the west.

Burwood North is a precinct identified in the Parramatta Road Corridor Urban Transformation Strategy (PRCUTS), which is a NSW Government strategy developed in consultation with Council that identifies ways to develop the precinct.

With the advent of the Burwood North Sydney Metro Station, this plan requires further review to best realise the benefits of the new Metro station.

Late 2021 Council undertook community consultation on the precinct principles to guide the future desired character of the Burwood North Precinct and understand how the community would like to see the precinct change into the future.

We asked a number of questions about the type of community the new Burwood North Precinct would create and this included questions regarding built form and design, delivery of new open space and the types of use you would like to see in the precinct. During consultation we received:

  • Over 1200 visits to our participate Burwood website,
  • Over 100 contributors to community feedback, and
  • Over 30 groups registered to attend at our information sessions.

We are currently assessing these findings and will be consider how these early principles will be used to inform the next stage of the planning process.

Importantly we recognise allot of enthusiasm within the community for the Sydney Metro project and the opportunity of offers to the Burwood Community.

What's Next

These consultation outcomes have given Council direction on how to proceed. Soon we will be consulting again with the community on stage 2 as the strategy is prepared for Burwood North.

These community consultation outcomes will be brought to a Council meeting in an issues paper in early 2022. This will give endorsement to proceed with the preparation of a planning proposal. This will formally start the process for the Comprehensive Local Environmental Plan (LEP) review.
