Background

The "Licence to Play: Burwood Event-Ready Streets" project is a Burwood Council initiative designed to transform key public spaces into vibrant cultural hubs by streamlining approval processes for temporary road closures and public events.

This project focuses on activating public spaces in three locations and enhancing their vibrancy with infrastructure such as public art and lighting. The selected spaces are:

  1. Burwood Road
  2. Clarendon Place
  3. Ford Lane

Supported by a $500,000 grant from the NSW Government through the Permit Plug Play Pilot Program, this initiative seeks to reduce barriers for event organisers and increase community engagement by making events more frequent and accessible. It aligns with the Council’s broader placemaking goals, fostering cultural, social, and economic growth.

Community members play a crucial role in shaping this project, ensuring that local needs and preferences are considered in its design and implementation. We invite you to share your ideas on how these spaces can be activated, contributing to the creation of more engaging and inclusive environments.

Project Locations

• Burwood Road (Belmore Street to Railway Parade)

• Clarendon Place (intersecting with Railway Parade)

  • Infrastructure upgrades to support the intermittent closure of Clarendon Place to cars in order to activate 720sqm of space for people

• Ford Lane (intersecting with Railway Parade)

  • Utilisation of temporary parking infrastructure to close Ford Lane to cars and activate 225sqm of space for people for a Wall to Wall public art activation event that will see the installation of lighting infrastructure and murals.
