What We've Heard from the Community

Council is actively listening to the residents of Croydon, and we acknowledge the community’s strong support for protecting the unique character and heritage of The Strand in Croydon.

The Strand is currently located in a Heritage Conservation Area, however it is not formally listed as a heritage item. A formal heritage listing would afford The Strand enhanced heritage protection under planning legislation.

At its Extraordinary meeting of 29 January 2025, Council resolved to take the next step to formally protect The Strand by initiating its Group Heritage Listing. This action reflects the community’s support for heritage recognition and the area's valued heritage character.

Heritage Assessment of The Strand

Following the 29 January 2025 resolution, Council engaged a qualified heritage consultancy, GML Heritage, in April 2025 to undertake a detailed heritage assessment of The Strand in accordance with the NSW Heritage Office Guidelines.

This independent assessment has now been completed and confirms that The Strand holds local heritage significance, reinforcing its importance to the character of Croydon and the broader Burwood community.

The following documents are available for public viewing under the Document Library tab on this Participate Burwood page:

  • The Heritage Assessment Report by GML
  • A draft Heritage Inventory Sheet for The Strand
  • The proposed amendments to the Heritage Map of the Burwood Local Environmental Plan 2012

Next Steps

Council has submitted the Planning Proposal to the Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure (DPHI) for their concurrence and issuance of a Gateway Determination. DPHI are currently reviewing the Planning Proposal and once Gateway Determination has been issued, Council will commence the formal public exhibition of the Heritage Assessment Report and Planning Proposal. This will provide the community with more opportunities for review and further input. All submissions will be reviewed followed by a Post Exhibition Report to Council.

Submissions are now closed
