Background
All councils are required to have a Code of Meeting Practice that guides how its council meetings are run. The Code includes rules around attendance at the meeting, notice of business, how debates are run, how the chairperson deals with disorder at the meeting and other operating matters.
The Office of Local Government issues a Model Code of Meeting Practice and, while councils can add their own local provisions, the Code they adopt must be consistent with that Model Code.
Following a number of changes to the Model Code in late 2025, a new Code of Meeting Practice is now proposed for Burwood Council. It is now publicly exhibited for comment.
