Background
All councils are required to have in place a Code of Meeting Practice, which is a set of rules to guide how business comes before Council and how meetings of Council are to be conducted. The Office of Local Government provides a Model Code of Meeting Practice and, while councils can add their own local provisions, the Code they adopt must be consistent with that Model Code.
Councils are also required to review and adopt a new Code of Meeting Practice within 12 months of each local government election, which will fall due in September this year.
The NSW Government has flagged that a new Model Code will be released later this year. While Council has reviewed its current Code, it is proposing to re-adopt that Code without any changes, delaying more substantial changes until the new Model Code is released and can be fully considered. If you're interested, keep an eye for further proposals in late 2025 or early 2026.
