Burwood Council is establishing its first Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Advisory Panel as part of our Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan (July 2025 - December 2026).

This Panel is an important way for Council to ensure First Nations voices are heard, respected and acted on.

Who We’re Looking For

We are seeking up to 10 Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander members who have a connection to Burwood or Wangal country.

This may include people who live, work, study or are involved in community here.

You might be an Elder, knowledge holder, community leader, emerging leader or young person who wants to be involved.

You do not need formal qualifications. Your lived experience, cultural knowledge and community connections are what matter most.

What’s Involved

As a Panel member, you will:

  • Guide and support Council’s Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP)
  • Share local knowledge about the needs and priorities of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
  • Provide cultural advice on Council projects, services, events and public spaces
  • Help plan and support NAIDOC Week, Reconciliation Week and other community events
  • Strengthen connections between Council, Elders, young people and community
  • Attend four meetings per year (with extra meetings if required)

Meetings are usually two hours and held at accessible venues.

Council will provide support if you need help preparing for meetings.

Selection Criteria and Process

To be considered, applicants must:

  • Identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander
  • Have a connection to Burwood or to the Wangal people
  • Be available to attend meetings and contribute actively

All expressions of interest will be reviewed by a small selection panel that includes Aboriginal community representatives and Council staff.

The panel will look for a mix of:

  • Elders, young people and emerging leaders
  • Different life experiences and areas of knowledge
  • Strong local connections

Shortlisted applicants may be invited for a yarn before appointments are confirmed.
